Your credit score influences far more than your ability to get a loan. It affects the interest rate you pay, your ability to rent an apartment, your auto insurance premiums, your job prospects, and even eligibility for certain security clearances. Despite its outsized influence, most consumers have never been taught how a credit score is actually calculated or how to correct errors that quietly damage it. This session, Taking Control of Your Personal Credit, breaks down the credit system in plain language. It begins with the real-world stakes of a poor credit score, then walks through how scoring models like FICO and VantageScore weigh the five key drivers of a score: payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, credit mix, and new inquiries. From there, the session moves into the credit report itself: how to obtain it, how to read each section (personal information, tradelines, collections, public records, and inquiries), and how information from lenders reaches the credit bureaus through the Metro 2 reporting format. The session closes with the dispute process, including the difference between paper and electronic disputes and the timelines consumers are entitled to under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, followed by proven strategies for rebuilding and strengthening credit over time. Delivered by Timothy Sanders, a Certified Credit Counsellors and Certified Financial Wellness Coach with nearly two decades of experience in consumer credit, this session is designed to be immediately actionable for both individual consumers and the professionals who support them.
Most consumers make major financial decisions, buying a home, financing a car, renting an apartment, without truly understanding the credit score that shapes their options and interest rates. This session equips attendees with a clear, practical understanding of how credit scores are built, what the credit bureaus report, and how small errors or oversights can cost thousands of dollars over a lifetime. Participants will learn how to read their own credit report line by line, identify inaccuracies, and file an effective dispute. Whether you are an HR professional supporting employee financial wellness, a consumer advocate, or simply someone who wants to take control of your own credit, this session translates complex FCRA concepts and scoring models into actionable steps anyone can use. Attendees will leave with a personal action plan for improving their credit score and avoiding the most common credit mistakes.
