Wound repairs can be simple, intermediate, or complex and these forms of repair are described in detail in CPT. We will look at each level of wound repair and the requirements for each category. We will also look at treatment of wounds that require repair with the use of grafts that include grafts from the patient themselves, other people, and even other species or artificial. We will the discuss the preparation and application of these types of grafts. Another topic included in this session if skin flaps and their role in the treatment of wounds.
There are several changes to the wound repair and graft codes for 2020, but with emerging technology in skin substitutes the coding will continue to change. This session will review the most common codes related to wound repairs and skin grafts. Many of these procedures occur because of injury, but they can also be related to other conditions related to other organ systems. Most of these forms of treatment have multiple codes that are assigned by the size of the area being treatment and the area of the body where the wounds are located.
